Toilet Seat Lifts and Bedside Commodes

Going to the bathroom is in most cases a very personal experience. It is also something that requires bending the knees and putting yourself in a very low sitting position. This is something that can be very difficult to do in a safe manner if you suffer from arthritis, do not have good balance, or are otherwise mobility challenged. A fall in the bathroom can also cause great injury due to the many hard corners, counters, and tile you usually encounter in most bathrooms.

There are a couple of mobility products that can help in this situation. Many people use bedside commodes which are steel framed with reinforced handlebars and can be placed in any room of the house. If you go this route, you will obviously have to empty the commode.

Another alternative is to use a toilet seat lift. A toilet seat lift installs over a normal toilet and lifts the seated individual up off of the toilet to a position that makes it easy to stand. They can also be used in the reverse manner to control the rate at which you sit. They have handle bars to provide extra support. Several models that do not require modification to the toilet are available and these types can be traveled with rather easily.
